Brian Stelter has gone viral on social media after his 5-year-old son crashed his live TV interview with host Jessica Dean

On Sunday, July 20, CNN's chief media analyst, 39, was in the middle of discussing Trump's $10 billion lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal when his son appeared on screen

“I apologize for my 5-year-old,” Stelter told viewers, before adding, “It's bedtime here at the Stelter house"

At around 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, CNN’s chief media analyst, 39, was discussing President Donald Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal over an article involving himself and Jeffrey Epstein when the unexpected happened.

Stelter — who was formally dressed in a suit and tie — initially appeared to be sitting in a TV studio with a neutral blue background similar to the one behind host Jessica Dean. However, it was quickly revealed that he was working from home when his 5-year-old son’s face appeared in the lower right corner of the screen.

The child had a mischievous grin on his face before moving out of the view of the camera, while Dean quizzed Stelter on his thoughts surrounding the story as he attempted to remain undistracted.

While Dean and Stelter managed to keep the tense discussion on topic with only subtle changes in facial expression at the time the child was on screen, they eventually acknowledged him crashing the interview with a lighthearted mention before wrapping up.

“Alright, Brian Steleter, thanks to you,” Dean said. “And I think you had a little helper with you, too, so give our thanks to him.”

“I apologize for my 5-year-old,” Stelter replied. “It's bedtime here at the Stelter house.”

Dean smiled as she attempted to reassure him that the apology wasn’t necessary, saying, “We’re a family show, it’s always nice to have some extra hands.”

Many CNN viewers were amused by Stelter’s son’s unexpected antics and discussed the moment on X.

“@brianstelter Looks like you had your assistant at your side with @jessicadean @CNN 👍❤️,” one person wrote.

“Loved it! We need a laugh now and then. He is adorable and it happens when you work from home,” another said.

Stelter replied to the comments, saying, “LOL, yes, I tried my best not to break out laughing when he snuck into the camera shot.”

From a politician’s son wanting to show off a carrot to Jimmy Fallon’s daughter wanting to talk about animals, it isn’t the first time that a live TV interview has been interrupted by children.

Arguably, the most memorable remains Professor Robert Kelly, who was making an appearance on BBC News when he was interrupted by both of his kids.

He remained calm as his wife tried to get them back out of the room so his interview about the political crisis in South Korea could continue.

Kelly commemorated the moment that brought him internet fame earlier this year on X, writing, “Today is the eighth anniversary of the 'BBC Dad' blooper, so here are some recent family pictures. The kids are growing fast.”
