Jennifer Hudson's son is about to be an employed man.
The EGOT winner, 43, recently spoke with PEOPLE during a panel at the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival on Tuesday, Aug. 5, ahead of The Jennifer Hudson Show's return with season 4. There, she joked that her 15-year-old son, David Daniel Otunga Jr., whom she shares with ex-fiancé David Otunga, "has grown" and is ready for his first job. "He is not a little kid anymore," she said.
"He'll be 16 on the 10th of this month. And it's time for him to get a job," Hudson said. "I said, 'Listen, I didn't grow up like [this]. I made it so you get to grow up this way. And I worked for everything I have and so you're going to have to start earning your keep, too.' Because our kids need that."

The singer and actress explained that every era of childhood is different and that now, her son is almost a grown man. "Little David is into basketball and music actually. And he's super tall," said the proud mom. "People are like, 'Who that man Jennifer with?' And I'm like, 'Y'all, that's my son.' That's how much he has grown. He's going into his junior year of high school."
This past May, Hudson spoke with PEOPLE about her surprise appearance at the Broadway production of Smash, and opened up about her summer plans with David. "We just want to be outside, because he's about to be a junior in high school, so he's a basketball kid and a music kid," she said. "So we love going to concerts and basketball games."
"I'm a basketball mom," she admitted. "So you're going to see me at a lot of those sports events. And a lot of concerts. Because we love music too. So we're just going to hang out and have a fun summer because we worked really hard throughout this school year."
