When The Blue Lagoon was released in 1980, people might not have predicted how controversial the film would be or how it would continue to be talked about for years to come. It stars Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins as two cousins who wind up shipwrecked on a deserted island as children. As time goes on and they grow into teenagers, the inevitable happens, and they fall in love and wind up having a child together.
Now 45 years after the movie, Atkins is being featured in Playgirl's July 2025 issue, and a handsome new shot of him was shared by the magazine on Instagram earlier this week.
Now 64 years old, he's just as good looking as ever, and he still has those trademark, wavy blond locks plenty of girls swooned over back in the day.

The image is making hearts flutter online, with one person saying, "Still a heartbreaker."

The interview with Atkins is a fascinating read, and the author notes, "In more ways than one, The Blue Lagoon was the answer to Playgirl’s pursuit of equality: the dream of 'opposing the double standard of expectation for women’s and men’s sexual expression.'"
Of his fame from the film and being known as a sex symbol, Atkins told Playgirl:
"They taped an interview not long ago, and it was when Brooke had put out her documentary about being sexualized in the industry, and we talked about me being sexualized and I said in the interview, 'well I was too.' In every film I did, I had to show my a--, you know. I was sexualized, I said, but I liked it and the interview never aired, they wanted dirt. I didn’t have any problem with it."
The Blue Lagoon was definitely groundbreaking, and odds are good that the buzz around it will continue as the years go on. One thing's for sure, it marked a major turning point in the careers of two young actors who would go on to become such huge successes.
