Luis Suarez knows the clock is ticking on his career, but he may not be ready to call it quits. At 38 years old, with his Inter Miami contract set to expire at the end of the 2025 MLS season, Suarez finds himself still scoring goals, delivering assists, and linked at every turn to Lionel Messi. And if his latest comments are anything to go by, he doesn’t plan to bow out of the game until Messi does.
Suarez admitted this summer that retirement is on his mind, but the bond he shares with Messi continues to shape how he sees his final chapter. “I would love to retire with him, because we’ve been talking about it for years,” he told reporters before Miami’s Leagues Cup quarterfinal against Tigres. It wasn’t just empty talk either. A day later, Suarez backed it up with a brace that carried Miami into the semifinals.

Both Messi and Suarez are out of contract after the 2025 season, and Inter Miami is already in discussions with Messi over an extension. Club insiders expect the relationship to continue, but until Messi signs on the dotted line, speculation will swirl. Suarez has made it clear that while each player’s decision will ultimately be personal, he wants to finish alongside his longtime friend.
The connection between the two is deeper than Inter Miami. After lighting up Europe together at Barcelona, they reunited in South Florida, where their impact has gone beyond just goals and trophies. Messi is Miami’s all-time top scorer with 59 goals, and Suarez is right behind him at 38.
The Messi-Suarez partnership isn’t confined to MLS. Earlier this year, the pair announced a new project in Uruguay: LSM, a professional club built on the foundation of Deportivo LS. Suarez said it was a family dream to give young players opportunities back home, while Messi pledged his support as a partner in the venture.
Still Producing, Still Demanding
Despite all the chatter about retirement, Suarez is still contributing to the game. He put up 20 goals in his first MLS season in 2024, and while knee issues slowed him in 2025, he has added six goals and 10 assists so far in league play, with 15 assists across all competitions. True to his reputation, Suarez even joked about being a “generous number nine” when asked about his assist tally, though he quickly reminded everyone that missed chances still make him furious.
Suarez has been blunt about how the long MLS offseason affected his body and made the start of this year more complicated than usual. But as the matches piled up, he said his rhythm returned, essentially dismissing the idea that older players can’t handle a busy schedule. That competitive streak has defined his career, and it’s clear he and Messi still carry the same hunger to win.
